What prompted the start of grayDUCK Gallery?
I have a fine arts background and experience in marketing and branding. When I moved down to Austin, I decided to put that all together and open an art gallery. A good friend of mine owned a well-loved art space in Minneapolis. He had a great vibe at his gallery that I wanted to emulate and he encouraged me to start my own space. In 2010 I opened grayDUCK.
What services and products do you offer?
The gallery focuses on Contemporary art from a broad range of exceptional artists both locally and nationally. Our exhibitions include painting, sculpture, video, mixed media and installations.
What guides you in selecting artist to represent? What qualities do you look for?
I’m drawn to artists that can execute their concepts with exquisite skill; Well-crafted work that draws a person in to explore the multiple layers of thought and meaning.
What new artists are you excited about today?
Libby Barbee – The American frontier myth and all it’s complexities inspire Libby’s collages. The work is comprised of satellite photographs of Earth, combined with fragments of painted paper, and images gleaned from the Internet.
Raul Gonzalez – Subjects including popular culture, his Latino heritage, and his experience as a stay-at-home dad inspire Raul’s current work.
Melissa Loop – Melissa is an artist from Minneapolis whose otherworldly paintings are based on her travels to faraway places that play on the idea of nostalgia, fantasy and memory.
Joe Sinness – Joe creates lush, vibrant colored pencil still life drawings that portray queer icons, and online erotica, combining them with thrift store items, flowers and jewels to create carefully constructed montages.
What advice would you give someone who is thinking about buying their first piece of serious original art?
Explore all the art spaces in Austin and pay attention to your gut. Love the art you buy, it will bring you joy every time you look at it for years to come.
grayDUCK was founded in 2010 in South Austin, and relocated to East Austin in 2014. In our art-energized neighborhood, we strive to exhibit the work of exceptional artists while creating a welcoming place for everyone: viewers, artists and neighbors. Monthly shows highlight artist’s work from a broad range of experience, both locally and nationally. Our refurbished 100-year old house is a hybrid of new and old, clean lines and comfortable wood. The inviting space with a modern sensibility is a beautiful place for artwork, poetry readings, film, music and performance, a place where art is integral to everyday life.
Beyond the Bio is curated by Art Alliance Austin, with the assistance of Scott Nyerges.
