Waller Creek Design Competition
Art Alliance Austin is proud to be a member of one of the final 4 teams in the Waller Creek Conservancy’s Design Competition.
The team, led by CMG Landscape Architecture (San Francisco, CA) and Public Architecture (San Francisco, CA) tapped Art Alliance to develop the Cultural & Public Art Programming portion of the submission. Also included in the Culture & Community portion of the strategic design was Dan Cheetham of FYOOG (Austin, TX), Austin Community Design and Development Center (Austin, TX), FOR-SITE / Haines Gallery (San Francisco, CA), Media and Place (Cambridge, MA), and Pentagram (New York, NY / Austin, TX).
The team, led by Willett Moss and John Peterson, intends to create, “a landscape authentic in its manifestation of Austin’s Character.” The team proposes, “a Score for Regeneration and Curation […] set upon a robust physical and ecological foundation.” Along with their full team of specialists in, “immersive, digital, traditional and atypical engagement, [they] will make Waller Creek a new model for urban regeneration that is rooted in the culture of the city.”
We are especially proud of that the jury report states: “It is in the engagement of the community, integration of art, and the process of regeneration that the proposal was truly exceptional.” Art Alliance Austin’s history is bound by regeneration through art, beginning at Laguna Gloria and its continued commitment to downtown Austin. We are firmly committed to the belief that art plays a key role in the future design of our city because of its ability to bring the community together and create a shared authentic identity.
Although, the CMG / Public Architecture Team was not selected design, it was an incredible competition experience, Art Alliance is exceptionally proud of our team and our submission for the Waller Creek Competition. Congratulations to the winners MVVA and Thomas Phifer & Partners, and thank you to the Waller Creek Conservancy, Competition Manager Don Stasny & Jennifer Mannhard, Competition jury, TAG Group, and the City of Austin for hosting us and running a fantastic competition
