MASS’s Hot Box Residency

MASS’s Hot Box Residency

MASS is excited to announce their annual Hotbox residency program. The Hotbox residency—now in its seventh year—transforms the gallery space into a working studio for two selected artists to develop works and programs for the Austin community for one month of the summer. MASS will host this years Hotbox residency in their new gallery space in East Austin.

This residency program seeks two individual artists or artist-teams interested in participating in a self-directed residency in Austin, TX. While applicants may be at any stage of their career, MASS is particularly interested in nurturing projects that would not be realized otherwise. MASS’s goal is to give artists the opportunity to explore new ideas or practices, and allow the participating artists to engage with the Austin community through their Close Encounters public programming series.

The artist or artist-team accepted as the Hotbox resident is obliged to participate in MASS’s public engagement series, Close Encounters. Close Encounters is a program designed to provide new methods of engaging the public’s curiosity. Open and broad, this prompt can be approached from a multitude of ways such as a performative event, a screening, or a radically executed thought experiment. This program is a challenge to the artist, as well as the audience, and is designed to provide a new way of encountering and understanding the artist’s creative process and or practice. All Close Encounters activities will be discussed on a case-by-case basis with the MASS community and events will only take place if all parties reach an agreement.

This year’s Hotbox residency will be located in the gallery space at MASS’s East Austin location. Residents will have daily access to the 800 square foot gallery which is furnished with track lighting, air conditioning, a chair and work table, wireless internet, ladder, and basic installation tools as needed. Likewise residents are welcomed to utilize MASS’s surrounding uncovered outdoor space for installations, performances, or production. MASS offers no production workshops of any kind but, if necessary, can assist in finding available options to satisfy specific project needs and/or other desired resident activities. A $500 honorarium will be awarded to each chosen artist or artist-team to assist in completing a successful residency.

Each resident will be financially responsible for transportation costs to and from Austin as well as for housing, living expenses, local transportation, production costs and any additional materials.

The Hotbox residency program is open to artists working in any medium and any stage in their career.
